Cypress Street

RON BRAULT lead vocal, guitars - BRUCE MUCKALA guitar, keyboard (accordion), tambourine - EARL FOOTE pedal steel, dobro - IAN CAMERON mandolin - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - RON, KELLY McGUIRE, BRUCE backing vocals

I burned that apartment down at least a time or two
I shaved my head and tied my shoes and sold my old blue suit
The ship had sailed, the sun fell down, and neither came back soon
But when I turned my head around it was a little bit of deja vu

When we meet on Cypress Street
Or was it Cypress Avenue?
What I see in front of me
Is the you I can't pursue

All these years and changes and we're more or less the same
But no one's really satisfied or changes much anyway
Leave the windows wide open, feel the wind come across the bay
When the dust has settled down there's nothing much left to say

I've had enough of them sad and lonely seasons
They've been stalking me for a hundred years
I've had my fill of all of those tragic reasons
I got 'em coming out of my ears

And when we meet on Cypress Street
Or was it Cypress Avenue?
What I see in front of me
Is the you I can't pursue
It's the you I can't pursue

High and Low
© 2005 by Bruce Muckala
RON BRAULT lead vocal, acoustic guitar, mandolin - BRUCE MUCKALA electric guitars - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - IAN CAMERON fiddle - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums, tambourine - RON, CHRIS AMES, PERRY WINDECKER backing vocals

I moved to the city, had a lot of fun
I was legal at 18, the web is spun
Youth and vanity, trouble and strife
She said I gave you the best years of all my life
I look high and low
Before I jump I look high and low

I looked like a sinner, down on my knees
Asked her to take me, I even said please
Don't mind the sweat drippin' from my nose
It's only a symptom of havin' no clothes
I look high and low
Before I jump I look high and low

I never met an angel, I never had a devil's curse
I think I'll give 'em a try, couldn't get much better or worse

When we get to heaven we'll find our keys
Run along little Sweetie, no finder's fees
Truth or treachery, its either one
You sign on the line and the deal is done
But I look high and low
Before I jump I look high and low
Before I jump I look high and low

Halfway to Happiness
© 2008 by Bruce Muckala
Based lightly on
a poem by Helen Hay Whitney, ca. 1910 Click here for the original poem.
BRUCE MUCKALA lead vocal, keyboard (accordion) - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - RON BRAULT guitars - NICK BROWN mandolin - RANDY LANDAS acoustic bass

Halfway to happiness, the whole way back again
You could see me stumbling down the stubborn hill from the twisted lane
The sunset surrounds my heart, I'm standing all alone
She used to sweep the leaves from my stepping stone

She and I would light the fire
Laughing at the rain
Halfway to happiness you might break before you bend
She and I could wake the night
Like a whistle from a train
Oh it's far to happiness
A short way back again

Nightshade and hyacinth, they circle 'round the bend
They could use some old-fashioned sympathy for facing down the wind
Brave enough to come on home, they know which way to go
That might be true this time of year, well I know, but even so...

Staring at my old guitar, it fits me like a glove
I used to play every night now I could use a little shove
No use to ever roam, the traffic comes and goes
I'm either falling like a stone or limping like a rose

Heartaches and heroes, well they seem to never mend
Like a wooden cross that breaks, like a river that bends
Always loved that girl, that's enough I suppose
That's the problem with Creation, ah, but that's the way it goes

She and I would light the fire
Laughing at the rain
Halfway to happiness you might break before you bend
She and I could shake the night
Like a whistle from a train
Oh it's far to happiness
A short way back again

Paint the Sky
© 1985 by Bruce Muckala
RON BRAULT lead vocal, electric guitar, guitar solo - BRUCE MUCKALA acoustic guitars - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - IAN CAMERON fiddle - RICHARD KENNEDY piano - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - RON, BRUCE backing vocals

Paint the sky with a painter's brush
Let the evening sun turn to rust
Sit yourself down and we'll add the last touch to the day

Sing a song, set your mind at ease
Close your eyes and we'll sail on the seas
Sit yourself down we'll do whatever we please

Some people want to tear it all apart
Some people are only happy with a broken heart

Name a tune and I'll sing it to you
Anything that you want me to
Sit yourself down and we'll do whatever we choose

Paint the sky with a painter's brush
Let the evening sun turn to rust
Sit yourself down we'll add the last touch to the day

Maria's Bed
© 2006 by Bruce Muckala
TYLER SMITH lead vocal - BRUCE MUCKALA guitars - EARL FOOTE pedal steel, guitars - RICHARD KENNEDY piano - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - TOM DUVAL, PERRY WINDECKER, BRUCE backing vocals

I've been thinking of some things to say
'Cause I'm such a fool for you
I never thought it could go this way
Now I don't know what to do
I've been gone for much too long
Now I'm coming home to you

Baby if you still need me
If you need me I'll be there
Baby if you can see me
I can see your room's bright design
Baby if you can hear me
If you could hear me each time
I said I'm gonna climb into Maria's bed.

Everyone in the whole wide world
Has seen the moon from this side
But there's no one like you honey girl
Who can take these things in stride
The night is clear and I can hear
Your door swing open wide

Baby if you still need me
If you need me I'll be there
Baby if you can see me
I can see your dark bedroom eyes
Baby if you can hear me
If you could hear me each time
I said I'm gonna climb into Maria's bed.

Baby if you still need me
If you need me I'll be there
Baby if you can see me
I can see your red lace surprise
Baby if you can hear me
If you could hear me each time
I said I'm gonna climb into Maria's bed

Graciela
© 2006 by Bruce Muckala & Michael Vlahakis
RON BRAULT lead vocal, guitar, mandolin - BRUCE MUCKALA keyboard (accordion) - TIM SPARKS guitars, guitar solos - PETE GENEROUS shakers, triangle - RON, BRUCE backing vocals

When we're out on the town I never know what you're thinking
Walking, not talking, or in the cantina drinking
I worry about you, novia, worry about your benders
I worry about you, chica, my sweet Graciela

When we stay at su casa, drinkin' in the game room
You stare in the firelight, like we're not in the same room
Your mind it has taken flight, le miro other places
Your mistakes can't be made right, departe a otro places

I see into you, here in your hacienda
I see into you, my sweet Graciela
I see into you, here in your hacienda
I see into you, Oh, Oh, mi Graciela

When we are out on the road, driving through the country
You could be atop a horse, out revenge-hunting
You will not find peace that way, always thinking muerte
You cannot be at peace that way, listen to what I say

I see into you, holed up in your hacienda
I see into you, my sweet, sweet Graciela
En tu miro aqui en su hacienda
En tu miro aqui mi dulce, mi Graciela

I see into you, sin su hacienda
Yeah I see into you, my sweet, sweet Graciela
En tu miro, aqui en su hacienda
En tu miro aqui, Oh, Oh, mi Graciela

Brenda and Jackie
© 2006 by Bruce Muckala
TYLER SMITH lead vocal - BRUCE MUCKALA guitars, shakers - RON BRAULT guitars - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - RON, BRUCE, ROB GILLILAND backing vocals

See these fingers, see this thumb
See this fist you better run
When it comes to Brenda, Jackie's got a jealous streak
They ran away in a cheap Chevette
He liked to call her his little Crepe Suzette
You can see why she still likes to sit on his knee

They never wrote
They never called
They never looked up old friends at all
Just tore a page from the Bible and drove away

They never owned what they had
Brenda and Jackie weren't so bad
You could say they were fundamentally sound
Life is short, short and sweet
You won't meet your paladin on the street
Don't take no Einstein to put your feet on the ground

Reading postcards in a bar after they had a few
Here's what they said
We were racking 'em up shooting pool when we thought of you
Wearing baseball caps and lookin' so amused

Brenda drove, Jackie rode
To him a map was like a secret code
They ran away I do believe they're still on the road

Bye Bye Those Pretty Blue Eyes
© 2007 by Bruce Muckala
BRUCE MUCKALA lead vocal, acoustic guitar - RON BRAULT acoustic guitar - EARL FOOTE pedal steel, harmonica - RICHARD KENNEDY piano RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums

The boy's got trouble with a restless heart
He never takes his time
He went looking for love without thinking first
He's already made up his mind

She wears his shirt, familiar and frayed
Its like he's still inside
For six days and nights her feet polished the floor
Now she takes it off, throws it aside
Then she said

Bye bye, baby, bye, bye
Bye, bye those pretty blue eyes

A little faith goes a long way
But so does a little pride
She's anxious, she's waiting, he's making it hurt
She wondered what he was trying to hide
Then she says

Bye bye, baby, bye, bye
Bye, bye those pretty blue eyes

A car goes by, the lights fade away
The curtains drift and sway
She looked at the moon coming over the hills
And realized she won't melt away
When she said

Bye bye, baby, bye, bye
Bye, bye those pretty blue eyes

Wheel Keep Turning
© 1985 by Bruce Muckala
PERRY WINDECKER lead vocal - BRUCE MUCKALA electric guitar, tambourine - RON BRAULT acoustic guitars & guitar solo - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - IAN CAMERON fiddle - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - CHRIS AMES, JES CONRAD, BRUCE backing vocals

Sometimes I think I'm over you
Just like today it's nothing new
Live in a dream when the nights are cold
Now my dreams are out of control
Seems like I've been living all my life for you
Wheel keep turning
Wheel keep turning
Keep turning round and round

Sometimes you think you're over me
You say that's how it's gotta be
But then you call when the nights are cold
No need to say it, I don't have to be told
Seems like we've been spinning round and round too long
Wheel keep turning
Wheel keep turning
Keep turning round and round

Sometimes I think I'm over you
Sometimes you think you're over me
Wheels of time have taken their toll
Rolled away like they've been bought and sold
Seems like I've been turned around and lost my way home
Wheel keep turning
Wheel keep turning
Keep turning round and round

My White Flag
© 2008 by Bruce Muckala
BRUCE MUCKALA lead vocal, acoustic & electric guitars, tambourine - MARK CLINE electric guitar - ROB GILLILAND acoustic guitar - KARL FRICK Hammond B3 - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums, shakers - TONY WATCHEL, BRUCE backing vocals

I've been telling myself, here goes nothing, I'm highway bound
I've been down that road before, always searching in the lost and found
It's so yellow and gray across the sky today
I've been up all night on a windowsill
I've been waving from the top of the hill

I've been waving my white flag
But you don't see it
I put a message under your door
Cuz you're my one
You're my only one

From St. Louis Park to Alvarado, I'm keeping score
A million roads to ramble down but only one leads to your door
Like a runaway wind, I'll follow to the end
If there's a reason to run, there's a reason to stay
But I surrender is so hard to say

I need you like the fields need the rain
Everyone knows you take care of love
It may never come again

Every Time
© 2006 by Bruce Muckala
DAVID CAGLE lead vocal - BRUCE MUCKALA acoustic & electric guitars - STEVE WEST electric guitar - EARL FOOTE pedal steel - IAN CAMERON fiddle - RICHARD KENNEDY piano - RANDY LANDAS bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - ROB GILLILAND, BRUCE backing vocals

I've been under two times already, I think I'm going down one more time
You need some kind of answered prayer, I need somebody to throw me a line
Cuz every time I'd ask you, the situation's new
A little change of scenery, changing from gray to blue

Oh Katy
Every week, every day, every minute
We're startin' to unwind
I'm like a prisoner without a crime
Every time

I got the blues everyday but Monday, I do believe I'm going insane,
I've been looking over my shoulder, you're like a heartbreak hurricane
And every time I'd ask you, the storm clouds gather again
You've got thunder in your heart, that nobody can restrain

I've been under two times already, I think I'm going down one more time
You don't have to draw me a picture, It's getting more and more like a crime
And every time I'd ask you, I knew I could read the signs
I can't stand to wait in line, but every line ends sometime

Either One or Both
© 2007 by Bruce Muckala
DAN BARNES lead vocal - BRUCE MUCKALA guitar, organ - IAN CAMERON fiddle - RICHARD KENNEDY piano - RANDY LANDAS fretless bass - PETE GENEROUS drums - RON BRAULT backing vocals

There's no rest at all for the wicked and the weary
Don't know if I'm either one or both
The saints can't rest assured that the sinners face the fury
We all come back weary and welcome home

These hard times can try a man's soul
Gotta pick up yourself to make it home
Though you know you always got me
I need you to hold on to yourself

If my eyes are open and its not too far to see
Then someone light a lamp, help us find the way
We're like a cool dry wind blowing 'round on the prairie
We all come back weary and welcome home

These hard times can try a man's soul
Gotta step up to the plate to make it home
Though you know you always got me
I need you to hold on to yourself

There's no rest at all for the wicked and the weary
Someone said your highs should meet your lows
The saints can't rest assured that the sinners face the fury
Don't know if I'm either one or both
I don't know if I am
Don't know if I'm either one or both
